San Bernardino is a city that currently serves as the county seat of California’s San Bernardino County, as expected of the name. It is situated in Southern California’s Inland Empire region, and spans 81 sqm. It is widely considered as one of Inland Empire’s anchor cities, and is currently the 17th largest city in California due to its population of 222,101. It is also the 102nd largest city in the country, and have a very diverse, inclusive population. They even have consulates in the downtown area for the governments of Mexico and Guatemala.

History

The land that San Bernardino occupies used to be referred to as “The Valley of the Cupped Hand of God,” by indigenous tribesmen. It is said that the Tongva Indians that reside in the area found the hot and cold springs in the San Bernardino Mountains because of the immense geological arrow-shaped formation of rocks in the area, which points to the springs.

The name came from Bernardino of Siena, and given by the first Spanish settlement in the valley – Politana. This Spanish settlement was established in May of 1810, consisting first of a mission chapel and a supply station. The settlement was eventually destroyed by the local tribesmen, and the quakes that are local to the region. The settlement was rebuilt several years later, and the missionaries where invited to return in 1819. These returning missionaries established the San Bernardino de Sena Estancia, which was inhabited by the Serrano and Cahuilla people until 1830s.

The exact area of San Bernardo was not fully established until 1851, when the first AngloAmerican colonists came and established the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. These were the Mormons, and they purchased the Rancho San Bernardino, where the yestablished the town of San Bernardino. The San Bernardino County was established a couple of years later, from parts of Los Angeles County. The Mormons further developed the city, bringing irrigation, commercial lumbering and farming, as well as encouraging agricultural produce throughout Southern California. A few more years after that, in 1857, the city of San Bernardino was incorporated.

After incorporation, the number of Mormons in the city was reduced due to a number of factors. Some of them were recalled because of the Utah War, while others were displaced when the El Monte and Los Angeles real estate consortium bought most of the lands. These lands were sold to new settlers, which brought their own culture, religion, and politics leading to San Bernardino becoming a more typical Americna frontier town. The turning point in San Bernardino’s history was in 1860, when the city was beset by the gold rush after the discovery of gold in the nearby mountains.

Geography

San Bernardino city is situated in the foothills of San Bernardino Valley’s eastern portion. It is known for the San Bernardino Mountains and the surrounding San Bernardino National Forest. This forest is home to the city’s Arrowhead Springs neighborhood in the north. The city stands out among its neighboring desert cities because there is an abundance of water, owing to the underground aquifers. The city also has a number of famous mountains and hills, such as Perris Hill, Kendal Hill, and Little Mountain. It has freeways that serve as geographical dividers for the city, consisting of Interstate 215 in the east-west, State Route 210 in the major north-south, and Interstate 10 in the southern part of the area. There are other major highways including State route 66, 206, 18, and 259.

Climate

The climate in San Bernardino is described as a hot summer Mediterranean climate, with its own share of hot dry summers and mild winters. As expected of a Southern California city. However, the city is markedly colder in winter compared to other areas in the region. The city has an arid climate during the summer, which hinders the formation of tropospheric clouds so the climate can get real hot, with temperatures getting close to a typical hot desert’s climate.
